Police standoff in Soundview leaves a mentally disturbed man dead

A police standoff in Soundview Tuesday left one mentally disturbed man dead.

Witnesses say the 32-year-old man was chasing a livery cab down Westchester Avenue Tuesday morning. They say he was banging a sawed-off shot gun against the vehicle.

Residents called the police when the man turned down Taylor Avenue and began threatening people. When the police arrived they ordered the man to drop his gun. According to witnesses, when the man refused, three police officers fired. The 32-year-old was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man was mentally disturbed and was living at home with his mother. They have not released his name.
