Fourteen people arrested in Bronx-based stolen car ring
Law enforcement agencies arrested 14 people in a Bronx-based stolen car ring.
Prosecutors say the former owners of Auto Sports Inc. used the shop as an auto theft ring. For three years, undercover law enforcement officers used wire taps, surveillance cameras, hidden microphones and tracking devices to uncover the luxury car theft ring.
According to the Bronx district attorney senior investigator, the accused men stole Japanese cars, high-end BMWs and a high-end Lexus series. The DAs office says the men took orders for cars and parts in the shop. The DA says the members of the ring changed vehicle identification numbers on parts, rebuilt cars with stolen parts and arranged for cars to be stolen for a payoff.
The 14 people have been indicted on charges ranging from enterprise corruption to auto theft and insurance fraud. If convicted, the men face up to 25 years in prison. The Bronx DAs office says most of the defendants have a scheduled court date on February 1.
