Former Senator Velella returns to jail to serve remainder of his one-year sentence
Former state Senator Guy Velella headed back to Rikers Island Monday after a court upheld a ruling that his early release was illegal.
Velella's release from Rikers Island had been under scrutiny ever since the former New York City Local Conditional Release Commission let him out of jail after serving only three months of a year sentence for bribery. The former senator's lawyer did make one last attempt Thursday to keep his client out of jail, but was denied another stay.
Velella served 18 years as state senator in Westchester and the Bronx and is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.
