Storeowners along Kingsbridge Avenue assess damage left by blaze

The owners of six stores along Kingsbridge Avenue are assessing the damage after a two-alarm blaze ripped through the strip just before midnight Monday.

The owner of the grocery store affected by the fire says some of the food and products are destroyed. He says there is also water in the basement.

According to fire officials, the blaze began inside the police equipment store and spread to the Riverdale Animal Hospital. Firefighters had to break through a ceiling to get the blaze under control.

Overall, the owners say they are thankful that the damage was not worse. It could be as long as a month before the stores can reopen. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
