BX residents to head back to polls in 17th District special election vote

The elections may seem like the distant past, but residents in the Bronx will soon be headed back to the polls.

City Councilman Jose Serrano becomes a state senator at midnight Friday, leaving his 17th District council seat vacant. The district includes a swath of the south Bronx, up to Highbridge and Melrose.

Serranos seat will be filled in a special election. According to election officials, the date of the vote should be announced on Monday and they expect the special election to be held sometime in late February.

Serrano will now represent District 28, a seat once held by Olga Mendez. Serrano defeated the veteran senator by a wide margin.
