Hindu temple in Soundview holds service to raise money for tsunami victims

(01/01/05) SOUNDVIEW - A Bronx Hindu temple held a special New Year's Day service to raise money for the victims of the tsunami in southeast Asia. Through a combination of pledges and cash donations, the Visnu Mandir Temple on Noble Avenue in Soundview raised $7,500.

Some members of one of the Bronx's largest Hindu congregations say they have distant ties to regions affected by the tsunami that has taken nearly 150,000 lives across about a dozen countries.

The temple says it plans to have a few more smaller drives in the days ahead and will donate the total amount of money it raises to a charity helping the tsunami victims. The Vishnu Mandir congregation says it has not yet decided which charity will get the money raised, but it is looking into several aid organizations at the forefront of the tsunami disaster.
