Tips to keep Bronx seniors safe as a wintry mix makes its way to the borough

A hazardous combination of rain and sleet is expected to make its way into the Bronx Thursday, worrying some seniors.

At one senior center in the Bronx, seniors said they are concerned about the weather. So to help them stay safe, the Department of Aging says seniors should avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, wear layers and keep dry to avoid hypothermia and frostbite. Symptoms of hypothermia include fatigue and feeling disoriented. Seniors who feel numbness in certain extremities may be experiencing frostbite. If symptoms are noticed, seniors are urged to call the city's hotline at 311.

For now, some seniors say they are simply going to stay at home during the bad weather.
