Other Bronx law enforcement agencies, besides NYPD, help prevent child abuse

(01/09/05) SOUNDVIEW - Besides the NYPD, there are other law enforcement agencies assigned to protecting kids from abuse in the Bronx.

The detective investigators of the Bronx District Attorney's office looks into suspected child abuse cases. They are police officers who are not part of the NYPD but work with the force. They also work with the administration for children's services.

Last year the investigators alone handled more than 100 cases of abuse. They arrested 12 people for hurting children and placed them in safe homes. Each year, hundreds of Bronx children are abused by people they know. Child advocates indicate that there are more cases of child abuse that go unreported.

To report child abuse in the Bronx, folks can call the New York State Child Abuse Hotline at (1-800) 342-3720. All calls will be kept confidential.
