Oil spill forces evacuation at M.S. 80; dozens of students taken to hospital

Students and staff were forced to evacuate M.S. 80 Monday after 20 gallons of oil spilled into the school's basement.

School staff says fumes spread into classrooms and offices, causing some students to become sick. Those who didn't become sick finished classes at a number of other schools in the area. Some children were sent home and others were taken to area hospitals.

Hazmat crews investigated and later deemed the building was safe to return to. Department of Education officials say students were back at M.S. 80 in time for dismissal. They say classes will resume Tuesday.
