Contractors in Morrisania get quite a scare while working at abandoned building

Contractors cleaning out an abandoned building in Morrisania got quite a scare Thursday when they stumbled upon what they thought was a grenade.

Police were called to 1079 Washington Avenue and immediately closed down the street. Police say the contractors found a metal canister with the word hand grenade on it under some garbage on the bottom floor of the building. The contractors said although most of the buildings in the area are abandoned they didn't want to take any chances.

After some investigating, police determined that the object was only a smoke bomb. It was removed from the scene and set off.
