FDNY urges Bronx residents to be cautious when trying to heat their homes

FDNY officials are warning residents to use caution when trying to heat their homes during the frigid weather.

The FDNY says heating systems cause most fires in the winter. Officials say pull furniture and all flammable items away from any heating devices. Space heaters should be used for a limited time each day and should never be connected to an outlet with an extension cord. Also be sure to unplug space heaters after each use.

In addition, FDNY officials say residents should never use stoves or candles to heat their homes. Anyone with a gas or electric furnace should also make sure they are properly maintained.

One important note that the FDNY stresses is to check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors frequently.
