Tremont building being investigated after two firefighters died fighting blaze

A criminal investigation is underway at the Tremont apartment building where two firefighters died battling a blaze Sunday.

Fire officials say six men had to jump from a fourth floor apartment on East 178th Street to avoid being burned to death. The FDNY says a preliminary investigation indicates men were forced to jump because of illegal partitions inside the apartment. Investigators say the walls blocked access to the fire escapes.

Residents who live in the neighborhood say illegal partitions are common in Bronx apartments. The four other firefighters remain hospitalized in critical condition.
