Mayor, schools chancellor announce creation of 22 small schools in the Bronx

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein announced Tuesday the creation of 22 small schools in the Bronx.

The small schools, which are slated to open this September, are part of an effort to improve the education system. The announcement was made at Mercy College, which is one of the sites that will hold two of the small schools.

Klein says small schools produce results. He says students who attend small schools have a better attendance record. Most of the schools will start out with about 100 students and will grow each year. Schools grade 6-12 will not exceed 600 students and some high schools and middle schools will not exceed 500 students.
