Gas main break causes evacuation of P.S. 92 in the Bronx

A gas main break outside of P.S. 92 Tuesday caused the evacuation of more than 400 students.

Teachers at the elementary school said they started smelling gas seeping into their classrooms around noon. The students were taken to nearby schools and their parents were notified.

The fire department and Con Edison were on the scene immediately. Officials for Con Edison said weathering caused the gas main under the street to burst. Gas was shut off in the area and Con Edison began work to repair the leak.

Students will resume classes at P.S. 92 on Wednesday. Con Edison officials say they will return gas to area homes in a few days.
