Popular Bronx skating rink shut down by police

Citing an extensive history of violence, the NYPD shut down popular Bronx skating rink Skate Key on Friday, despite children arriving there for a birthday party.

Police say the shutdown comes after Skate Key sold alcohol to minors at least twice within the past year, and a plethora of violent incidents occurring in and around the area. Last February, a person was slashed and three police officers were hurt while trying to apprehend the suspect. Months later, a 15-year-old got into a fight inside the rink and was later shot after he left.

Skate Key will remain closed until the owner appears in court, where a judge will decide when to reopen. Under the Nuisance Abatement Law, the rink could be shut down for up to a year.
