New nationwide homeless prevention program underway in Mott Haven
A new nationwide homeless prevention program has kicked off in Mott Haven in an effort to curb the problem.
The program, which is the first of its kind, is based on a two-prong approach. There is a court-based unit to hear eviction cases and a community based unit to discuss social services issues. Organizers hope the approach addresses all the social and economic issues facing residents.
Mott Haven was chosen to start the program because according to the city's Department of Homeless Services, out of the 23,000 eviction cases, 5,000 were in Mott Haven.
