FTC officials offer Bronx residents advice on how to prevent identity theft

Federal Trade Commission officials say identity theft was the number one consumer crime in the Bronx last year. However, FTC officials say there are many ways to protect personal information.

According to the FTC, credit card fraud is the most common form of identity theft. Other ways identities can be stolen are through Internet auctions and sales, catalog sales, and online banking. Officials say consumers can also lose money through home improvement fraud and telemarketing schemes.

The FTC says residents should always be alert in their day-to-day activities. Experts recommend people keep passwords and pin numbers secret. Officials add that consumers do research on companies and home improvement contractors. Residents are also urged to shred all important documents before throwing them away.
