Bus drivers gather at BX courthouse for fellow driver who was attacked

Bus drivers from across the city gathered at the Bronx criminal courthouse Wednesday to show support for a fellow driver who was attacked by a passenger.

Bronx bus operator David Diaz was attacked by a passenger on the BX55 bus he was driving down 3rd Avenue on January 26. Many bus drivers are outraged at this most recent episode of violence against a bus operator. Some are also angered at the low bail that was set for the man accused of attacking Diaz.

A representative from the transit workers union says drivers are attacked 140 times a year. And although a law says assaulting a bus driver is equal to assaulting a police officer, drivers say the law is often not enforced.
