Maria del Carmen Arroyo wins election for City Council District 17 seat

(02/15/05) MOTT HAVEN - Voters in the Bronx went to the polls Tuesday, and early results of the special election project Maria del Carmen Arroyo as the new District 17 councilwoman.

Arroyo went up against William Alicea, a former housing commissioner, Charles Serrano, a retired NYPD detective, and Alberto Torres, a lifelong resident of the south Bronx. However, the Arroyo supporters turned out in the greatest numbers to elect their candidate to the seat. Arroyo says her recognition within the community was a large contributing factor to her victory.

Residents had been without representation since Jose Serrano was elected to the state Senate. Arroyo is expected to be sworn in Wednesday.
