Health care administrator elected to serve south Bronx in the City Council
A health care administrator with more than 20 years experience was elected by south Bronx residents to serve in the 17th City Council District.
Maria del Carmen Arroyo defeated William Alicea, a former housing commissioner, and Charles Serrano, a lifelong resident of the south Bronx, for the seat vacated by Jose Serrano, who was elected to the state Senate.
Arroyo says her recognition within the community was a large contributing factor to her victory. She says her first order of business will be to stop a homeless shelter from being built on Willis Avenue and 142nd Street.
Since Arroyo takes office in the middle of an election cycle, she will have to run again in the general election come November.
