Williamsbridge churchgoers fed up about paying parking meters during services

Williamsbridge churchgoers are calling it ?pay-to-pray.? Members of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Williamsbridge say they are fed up with having to run outside in the middle of Sunday services to feed the parking meter.

City transportation officials say Sunday parking meter rules have been in effect in different parts of the city for more than a decade. But over the last three years, the rules have expanded into more Bronx neighborhoods. City officials say the meters are used to turn over parking spaces in busy shopping districts, enhancing commercial activity.

City council members have been visiting churches to raise support for a bill that would get rid of Sunday parking meter rules throughout the city. They say raising revenue for the city is good, but not by having meters in effect on Sundays.

Council members sat the mayor is against suspending Sunday parking meter rules. They also say they are just three votes shy of a veto-proof majority.
