CUNY and SUNY students take fight over proposed tuition hikes to City Hall

CUNY and SUNY students from the Bronx and city took their frustrations about the governor's proposed tuition hikes to the steps of City Hall.

Governor George Pataki (R-NY) is proposing to increase SUNY tuition from $4,350 to $4,950. CUNY tuition would go up by $250, bringing the total to $4,250. The governor says the hikes are needed to close the state's budget gap. But students say the hikes will prevent future generations from going to college.

A spokesperson for the governor's office said despite the hikes, students would be paying less than those attending public colleges in the Midwest and New England.
