Bronx severely underserved when it comes to animal welfare

Bronx animal activists are concerned with the lack of funding and services dedicated to animal welfare. With no animal shelters, the Bronx is the most underserved borough in the city. The Bronx has only one drop off center, the Animal Care and Control of NYC, to serve the needs of the community. The center is open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays and rescues about 150 animals a day and 10,000 a year. With a bigger fulltime shelter in the Bronx, animal activists feel that they can significantly decrease the amount of animals put to sleep in the city. Officials say that there are no plans for a shelter in the Bronx in the near future.
