Bronx livery cab drivers say safety initiatives aren?t working

Bronx livery cabs drivers say safety initiatives are not working because the NYPD and the public aren?t aware of the safety devices installed in taxis.

Livery cabs have been equipped with a light in the back of the cars that flashes if the driver is in trouble. NYS Federation of Taxi Drivers President Fernando Mateo says the problem with the devices is that many police officers don?t know what the flashing lights mean. Mateo also says residents need to be informed in the event they spot a cab with a flashing light.

Mateo says although cameras have also been installed in livery cabs, it has been the latest items that thieves are targeting. Mateo is urging all drivers to report stolen cameras to the NYPD. He is hoping the police will start a task force to stop robberies of livery cab drivers.
