City reports decrease in applications for housing vouchers in BX and city

City officials report that the number of applications for housing vouchers has dropped to the lowest point in four years.

The news comes on the heels of the switch from the federal Section 8 housing program to a new program created by the Bloomberg administration. Under the new program, Section 8 housing was replaced with a temporary rent subsidy. The administration believes the old system encouraged families to become homeless.

Homeless advocates say it's too soon for the city to call the program a success.
