Bronx building workers extend strike deadline in labor dispute

More than 1,000 members of Union 32BJ have extended their strike deadline until midnight Wednesday. The union members are threatening to walk off the job if a new contract deal with the landlord's association is not reached by that time.

Members of 32BJ, which includes building superintendents, porters, and repairmen, want a new three-year deal with better wages, benefits, and pension. The workers say their current pay is not on par with what the rest of the city is getting.

But the landlord's association says it cannot provide much more because the low-incomes in the Bronx prevent them from raising rents. The association says it is doing all it can.
