Former state Senator Guy Velella released from jail

Former State Senator Guy Velella was released from jail Friday morning. The once powerful Republican, who represented parts of Westchester, left Rikers Island after serving six months of his one-year sentence for bribery.

Velella was freed in September when he was granted early release by the city's Local Conditional Release Commission. A judge ruled that the original panel did not have the authority to grant Velella's freedom and he was sent back to jail on December 27.

Velella resigned from his Senate seat after representing communities in the Bronx and lower Westchester for 18 years.
