Bronx man claims he was assaulted in front of his home because he was gay

Police say a Bronx man was assaulted Saturday night in front of his home because he was gay.

Authorities say Nelson Torres was assaulted around in front of his apartment on West 197 Street. Torres told police a group of teenagers followed him home from the corner of 197th and University Avenue. Torres works for the Hispanic Aids Forum in the Bronx where he heads up a program targeting violence against gays. Torres is asking Bronx residents to take a stand against violence to prevent something like this from happening again.

The Hispanic Aids Forum is offering $1,000 reward to anyone with information on the case. Anyone one with information should call the Hate Crime Task Force at (646) 610-5267.
