Early morning fire at Morrisania market destroys building; several injured

An early morning explosion destroyed a grocery store in Morrisania Monday. Employees were opening the Associated Grocery Store when they smelled gas. They say when they turned on the lights, the store exploded. The blast shook several buildings in the area, but none of the nearby apartment buildings had to be evacuated. Fire officials contained the fire within minutes. One firefighter, however, suffered minor injuries from the blaze. Three store employees were also sent to the hospital, but their injuries were not serious. Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the explosion. There is no word yet on whether or not the owner will rebuild.
