Illegal immigrant crackdown has some Bronx immigrants feeling helpless
The government is cracking down on illegal immigration to counter terrorism, but some Bronx immigrants say the changes are ruining their American dream. An Irish immigrant from Woodlawn recently tried to get a driver?s license, but was denied because he did not have a Social Security card. He said he couldn?t get a Social Security card because of tougher laws aimed at stopping terrorists from getting phony identification. This is just one of many post-September 11th crackdowns that has Bronx immigrants feeling helpless. President Bush is proposing a temporary guest worker permit for immigrants to hold jobs in the U.S. even if they're not legal citizens. There is also talk of a provision to cover immigrant driver's licenses under that worker program.
