Nearly 100 students, faculty at Bronx High School of Science come down with illness

School health officials continue to investigate why an unusually large number of students and faculty at one Bronx high school were absent last Monday. Bronx High School of Science Principal Valerie Reidy sent a letter home to notify parents that the absentee rate on Monday was 19 percent. The daily average absentee rate is 4 percent. Reidy says since Friday, nearly 100 students have complained of stomachache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Officials from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are looking into the matter. They say that it is not unusual to see an increase in viral infections this time of year. Reidy says although there is no reason to believe students became ill from something at the school, they are following safety measures to make sure others don't get sick.
