Bronx residents take steps to prepare for emergency health care decisions

As the dispute over Terri Schiavo's fate made headlines worldwide, a record number of Bronx residents took steps to avoid such conflicts in their own families. Bronx resident Beverly Laughlin gave her son the responsibility to decide on issues concerning her health by appointing him her healthcare proxy. The New York Healthcare Proxy Law allows people to appoint someone they trust to make decisions regarding their health.The New York Department of Health reports that in the last month, visits to the healthcare proxy section of its web site have increased by 500 percent.
