Bronx residents say uneven sidewalks could cause hazardous conditions

Many Bronx residents say uneven sidewalks could cause tripping hazards right in front of their homes. However, a new program will repair the sidewalks with no cost to homeowners.

Trees in Bronx neighborhoods can turn sidewalks into potential hazards when their roots upturn sidewalks causing people to trip over them. Previously homeowners had to pay to fix their own sidewalks. Now a pilot program announced by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will repair sidewalks for free.

The Bronx will receive $500,000 to fix sidewalks. Sidewalk repairs will be prioritized according to how severe the damage is and if the sidewalk is in a high traffic area.
