Lawmakers expand program aimed at helping areas in the Bronx and state
Lawmakers in Albany are expanding the Empire Zones Program in an effort to revitalize rundown areas in the Bronx and the rest of the state.New business owners who locate in the zones are granted extensive tax breaks and credits for each new employee they hire. State lawmakers say they want to create 12 new zones by 2009. Some critics, however, say the expansion of the program is diluting its effectiveness. The Bronx has Empire Zones in Hunts Point and Port Morris. It has not been determined if the Bronx will get any additional zones.
