City releases results of homeless study in the Bronx and city

There are an estimated 4,395 homeless people living on New York City's streets and almost 600 of them can be found in the Bronx, according to the city?s Department of Homeless Services. Teams of volunteers went to all five boroughs in March, keeping track of how many homeless people they saw sleeping on the street, in parks, and in subway stations. The numbers in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island are virtually identical to last year. This is the first year, however, the Bronx has been included in the study. Homeless advocates say the report is one way the federal government allocates funding for homeless services. They worry about decreased funding if the report shows an inaccurate number of people living on the streets.
