Bronx subway station renovations to move forward despite MTA cuts

(04/28/05) PARKVIEW ? Despite $1 billion cutbacks in the MTA budget, subway riders in the Bronx will still see upgrades made to their stations.

MTA officials say the cutbacks became necessary after an infusion of funding from the state did not take place. Now, much-needed renovations to 12 city stations have been cancelled. Nine subway stations in the Bronx will still be fixed up, but the projects will not be as extensive as planned.

Representatives of the Strap-Hangers Campaign blame Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NY) for the cuts. According to the mayor?s critics, Bloomberg has not contributed enough city money to ensure a smooth ride for individuals using public transit.

In addition to nixing renovations, the MTA may put other projects on hold.
