Financial advisor offers tips for Bronx graduates trying to pay off debt

Another year of college is wrapping up for most Bronx undergrads and many students are facing unforeseen debt and maxed-out credit cards. According to the Credit Union National Association, by the time most college students graduate, 30 percent owe $10,000 to $25,000 in credit card debt and student loans. Barbara Anthony, the northeast regional director of the Federal Trade Commission, says there are simple steps college students can follow to get out of debt. She says students should first get a copy of their credit report. If there are any problems, they should have them worked out. Anthony also says if students are having trouble paying off bills, they should call their creditor to work out a payment plan. Students should also avoid credit repair programs promising a quick fix.
