City Council members say mayor's restructuring of city schools not working

Some members of the City Council say Mayor Bloomberg?s (R-NY) restructuring of city schools is not working and they cite new test scores from eighth-graders as proof. Last year, more than 80 percent of all eighth-graders in the Bronx and city failed to meet state standards in social studies and fifth grade test scores also dropped. City Council members say the test scores prove that the Department of Education is not taking social studies seriously enough. Test scores in social studies also fell statewide, but Bronx and city scores are still significantly lower than the rest of New York. Education officials say they will continue to make sure the subject is focused on in the curriculum.
