Increased police presence having an impact on high-crime Bronx areas

(05/16/05) THE BRONX ? NYPD officials announced Monday their initiative to curb crime in the Bronx?s most dangerous areas is paying off.

As part of Operation Impact, the NYPD placed an increased police presence in four high-crime Bronx areas. In these sections, known as impact areas, police say crime has dropped during the past year. According to the NYPD, homicides have dropped 50 percent, rapes have dropped 63 percent and burglaries have dropped 37 percent.

People living in the four impact areas say they have noticed a difference. According to residents, they feel much safer due to the visible police presence in their neighborhood.
