Cell phone-etching program aimed at getting stolen cell phones back to owner

Police officers in the Bronx are on the look out for a suspect who has been stealing cell phones from people near the Allerton Avenue subway station. The 49th Precinct's Crime Prevention Office has created a cell phone-etching program, where specific numbers are embossed on the phone. If a cell phone is stolen and recovered it can be traced to its owner. The NYPD is considering expanding the cell phone-etching program throughout all precincts in the Bronx.
