Hundreds of beach goers expected to turn out for opening of Orchard Beach

Hundreds of beach goers are expected to turn out for the official opening of Orchard Beach in the Bronx Saturday and the unofficial start of summer. Beachgoers say they've been looking forward to the warm weather for months and they're hoping for a dry holiday weekend. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene says Bronx swimmers can take a dip in the water beginning Saturday. The water has been tested and it?s safe for swimmers. It?s a lot different than last year, when high bacteria levels kept beach goers out of the water. Bronx residents, however, may choose to skip the surf at least for a while. The water temperature is a chilly 50 degrees. Park officials say whatever your decision, there are plenty of lifeguards to watch over Bronx swimmers.
