Mayor releases English and math test scores for Bronx and city students
Bronx and city students achieved record high scores this year on citywide English and math exams, according to the mayor?s announcement Wednesday. Three years ago, the state Legislature gave city leaders control of all city schools. Since then, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NY) has worked to end social promotion, improve school safety and increase parent involvement. Citywide, the number of students who met or exceeded standards increased for both the math and English tests. Officials say the improvements trickled down to the Bronx as well. Council Speaker Gifford Miller, however, said half of the children in public schools are still not meeting basic standards. The citywide English and math exams were developed and graded by independent testing companies.
