Two Bronx players expected to be high picks in Major League Baseball draft
Two Bronx players are expected to be high draft picks when the Major League Baseball draft begins Tuesday. Pedro Alvarez from Horace Mann High School is expected to be picked in the first five rounds. Alvarez, a shortstop for the Lions, will switch to third base next year. Johnny Monell from Columbus High School is also expected to be a first-day draft pick -- somewhere in the 10-15 round range. The switch-hitting catcher was sixth in the PSAL in hitting this season.
