Identity theft is the number one consumer crime in the Bronx

Identity theft was the number one consumer crime in the Bronx last year. And, as word comes out of a security breach at a credit card processing company, consumers are being told to be on alert.

Experts say there are hundreds of scams looking to take personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) say credit card fraud is most common. However, bank fraud, sweepstakes schemes and telemarketing scams are also common.

Bronx residents are advised to guard their personal information and know who they are doing business with. The FTC says don?t let anyone have access to Social Security numbers and personal account identification numbers. Experts warn if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
