Bronx senator calls on state to change the way rape cases are tried in New York
Bronx officials called on the state Sunday morning to update its rape laws.
Senator Jeff Klein (D- Bronx/Westchester) joined Senator Diane Savino (D- Staten Island/Brooklyn) to say there?s a loophole that allows many sexual predators to be held unaccountable for their actions. It?s a statute of limitations that allows them to go free after five years. Klein wants to abolish the statute and have rapists tried the same way as accused murderers or kidnappers.
Klein will also reveal the results of a survey his office completed that compile the number of open rape cases across the city. The bill is currently in the Senate?s rules committee and Klein hopes it will pass before this year?s session is over in five days.
