Power being restored to residents in Co-op City

Power is being restored in Co-op City after thousands were left in the dark without air conditioning.

Fire officials say 14 apartment buildings lost power around 9 p.m. Wednesday. They say several people had to be rescued after getting trapped in elevators. Fire officials remained on the scene overnight to make sure all residents were safe.

The Co-op City power plant supplies energy to the apartment buildings. A fire official says a downed cable caused the blackout.
