Some Bronx kids are sharpening their pencils again

Many Bronx children will be slinging their backpacks on again on as they head for summer school, starting Tuesday.

The Department of Education (DOE) is urging around 180,000 students to fill classroom desks from now through August. Second and fifth-graders are packing the classrooms looking for another shot at the required standardized tests. Scores for the standardized test increased over the past year, thereby making it harder for all students to pass.

To help students pass tests and receive needed credits, the DOE wants to use some of the same successful strategies implemented during the regular school season. A spokesperson for the DOE says class sizes will not exceed 15 students per class.
