Pataki tours one of BX's oldest landmarks to show support for developing the land

Governor George Pataki (R-NY) vowed Wednesday to help with efforts to develop one of the borough's oldest yet underutilized landmarks.

As the governor toured the Kingsbridge Armory he said he supports developing the 565,000 square foot space, but added that the city must meet him half way. Currently, the National Guard is the only group using the building. According to the city's Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which has control over any new projects, the National Guard's presence has caused a major roadblock for any development efforts. The EDC does agree though that whatever is done with the land must be done in conjunction with the state.

Before any projects for the armory can be approved, the city must find a new home for the National Guard as part of its agreement when it took over the land in 1996.
