Complaints by residents about rats in the Bronx are on the rise

The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene met Thursday to discuss the ongoing rat problem, which has led to an increasing number of complaints in the Bronx.

The department has been testing a pilot program, which requires inspectors to figure out which areas are plagued the most by rats. Communities high on the list are the Grand Concourse, Highbridge and Melrose. Pest control experts say the best way to fight the rat problem is to throw away trash properly. Residents say it's not just the city's responsibility to fix the situation. They say it's also up to tenants to do their part.

Anyone who has a rodent problem is urged to call 311.
