Mott Haven residents say landlord refuses to make repairs to their building

Tenants who live at 421 East 135th Street in Mott Haven say their landlord refuses to make any repairs to their building.

The New York City Department of Housing says the previous owner of the building abandoned it. The new owner, Ray Velez, says he won?t make repairs until the tenants pay last year's rent. Velez also says he?s not making repairs because the entire building needs to be gutted.

In order to make the repairs, Velez says all the residents need to move out of the building. Once the building is renovated Velez says it will be turned into a three-family home. Tenants say they are taking their issues to court.
